Marriage Counseling With Dr. Walker

Assessment and Basic Tools for Marriages

At the first couple session, Dr. Walker will ask you each a lot of questions. Whatever she asks one partner, she will ask the other so that the interview is fair and balanced. She will not only ask about the issue you presented in your ten minute consultation, she will also ask about the history of your marriage, recent stressors, and health issues. At the conclusion of this 90-minute assessment, she will explain clearly how marriage counseling with her will help. She will also tell you honestly if she feels her expertise is not a good fit for you and refer you to another professional.

If all parties agree to go forward, Dr. Walker will schedule a ‘Cycle.’ This consists of one individual session with each partner, followed by a couple communication session (individual sessions are confidential unless there is an undisclosed active affair or active addiction). Couples can expect to leave the communication session with basic active listening tools to navigate conflict and participate in difficult conversations.

In most cases, couples find that the tools are enough to begin moving forward in their marriage. Many times, however, couples are excited about their progress and decide to use therapy focus on specific issues.

Specific Tools

‘Specific Tools’ sessions consist of another ‘cycle’ (individual session with each partner followed by a couple session) or three couple sessions. These sessions are goal-oriented and solution-focused and couples are expected to work on issues outside of the sessions. We bundle these sessions into groups of three, and for convenience, couples may choose to pre-pay bundles in order to receive a discount.

Couples are usually able to experience significant symptom relief after only a few ‘Specific Tools’ sessions. We realize some issues may require more time or new issues may arise. For those reasons, if all parties agree, we are able to offer ‘Supportive Therapy.’

Supportive Therapy

Supportive therapy is for couples who are dealing with new issues, or, who are dealing with issues that require more time. Our strategy is still solution-focused and goal-oriented. Like ‘Specific Tools’ sessions, ‘Supportive Therapy’ sessions are bundled into three, and for convenience, clients may choose to pre-pay bundles in order to receive a discount.
