Dr. Kate Walker, Ph.D. is the Owner and CEO of achievebalance.org© and the non-profit counseling center Ann's Place. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor. Trained as a marriage and family expert, Dr. Walker specializes in couples and families, especially those struggling to survive addictions and infidelity. Her clinical experience also includes working with families with a member suffering from addiction, parents with challenging children, victims of abuse, and individuals struggling with depression and anxiety. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Walker has served as an adjunct professor of master’s – level counseling students at Sam Houston State University and has been a featured presenter at several professional conferences including the Texas Counseling Association Annual Conference, the Texas Association of Marriage and Family Therapists Annual Conference, and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision National Conference. She serves on the Doctoral Advisory Board at Sam Houston State University and she has written articles for publications including Adult Span Journal – the official publication for the Association for Adult Development and Aging and Professional Issues in Counseling. Dr. Walker, along with Dr. Judy DeTrude, are continuing education providers for LPCs and LMFTs in Texas and have trained hundreds of counselor supervisors. Dr. Walker earned her bachelor of music degree from The University of Texas at Austin and she has performed on recordings including Sanctus and 10 for the Heart. Dr. Walker attended Sam Houston State University for her master's and doctoral degrees.

SUPERVISION CEUS

Dr. Judy DeTrude is licensed in Texas as a Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and is an Approved Supervisor for both of the licenses. She has been providing supervision to interns since 1985. Dr. DeTrude has been the Clinical Director for two university counseling centers and recently retired as a professor in counselor education from Sam Houston State University. She has done extensive research in the field of ethics and has presented nationally on this topic. Her clinical interests are premarital counseling, working with blended families and helping families with the relocation process. She has received two university research grants for her work in premarital counseling. Kent State University established the Judith A DeTrude Professional Development Award and recognizes doctoral students each year with this award.

Dr. DeTrude is on the Executive Board for a new journal, Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice and Social Science, and she was the founding editor of an online journal, Professional Issues in Counseling. In addition to her clinical work, she is on a task force to develop an online counseling program with a university from New York. While at Sam Houston State University, she wrote the self-study and coordinated the team site visit for CACREP to come and evaluate the university. CACREP is the the accreditation body for counseling programs. The community counseling program received the full eight years of accreditation after this site review. She plans on continuing her professional activities in the counseling field by offering workshops for continuing education for LPC's and LMFT's.

Dr. DeTrude coordinates Supervision Continuing Education and not taking new clients at this time.

FAMILIES AND PARENTING

Jennifer Bornsheuer is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas as well as a National Certified Counselor. She received her Master's Degree in Counseling and Development from Texas Woman's University and is currently working towards her Ph.D. in Counselor Education at Sam Houston State University. Jennifer received her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a minor in Counseling from the University of North Texas. She is an active member of the Ethics Committee, Proposal Committee, and Strategic Planning Committee of the Texas Counseling Association, and a member of the American Counseling Association. Jennifer was an officer in Chi Sigma Iota during her mater's program and currently serves as the doctoral liaison to the Chi Sigma Iota branch at Sam Houston State University. In addition to her clinical work, Jennifer teaches several undergraduate courses in Counselor Education at Sam Houston State University.

Jennifer works with children, adolescents, and adults. Her passion is utilizing play therapy with children and activity therapy with adolescents to help them find their place in the world, develop competence, and achieve their goals so they can become fully functioning individuals. Jennifer has worked in a variety of settings including schools, community agencies, mental health clinics, and detention centers. Her experience includes assisting clients with anger, anxiety, bullying, depression, divorce, life transitions, abuse, relationships, and legal system involvement.

ADULT INDIVIDUAL AND COUPLE COUNSELING

Sue Watkins is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist both in Texas and California. She did her graduate work at Fuller Theological Seminary. She also was an adjunct professor at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA. Before moving to Texas, she had a successful practice for 16 years.

Since moving to Texas she has worked as the Executive Pastor for a local church and later as the Executive Director of the Pregnancy Assistance Center.

Her passion is helping people move past the obstacles in their lives. We all have obstacles, some of which can be:
• Growing up in an alcoholic family
• Continually ending up in dysfunctional relationships
• Not knowing how to set appropriate boundaries in work and personal life
• Unable to move out of the role we had in our family growing up
• Stress from our current family members
• Living with chronic physical pain
• Issues of faith – how can God let this happen? Is it OK with God that I am depressed, angry, anxious?

Jennifer Meehan is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Texas as well as a National Certified Counselor. Jennifer has worked for the last 15 years in public education and knows the struggles that parents and children can face while trying to achieve success in the classroom. Jennifer received her Master’s degree from Sam Houston State University in 2008. Jennifer and her husband have two very active teenage boys and are in leadership roles both at their church and in the local school PTO. Jo Ann Broquie is a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology and a Licensed Professional Counselor. She provides individual and group counseling, psycho-educational assessment and lifestyle seminars. Jo Ann has extensive experience in diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Emotional Disturbance as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Her experience includes 10 years working with, students, school districts and families in discovering the Individual Education Plan that is best matched for success. In addition to her work with student assessment and counseling, Jo Ann’s counseling experience includes working with individuals and groups struggling with eating disorders, weight management issues, and the management of medical conditions such as cardiac disease, diabetes and Mild Cognitive Impairment. Through behavior modification and cognitive restructuring, she works alongside her clients in helping them uncover the person they were always meant to be. Jo Ann earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas at Tyler and also holds a Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas at Tyler. Jo Ann continued her Master’s level education to complete a School Psychology specialization.

ADDICTIONS AND RELATIONSHIP COUNSELING - ADOLESCENTS AND ADULTS

Tia Parsley is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor in Texas and Arkansas. She has over ten years of counseling individuals and families, improving relationships, working with parents, and helping individuals with emotional issues such as anger management and bereavement. Tia earned her Master of Education Specializing in Counseling from Southern Arkansas University. While in Arkansas, Tia collaborated with the juvenile judicial system to develop programs to assist adolescents and families with issues such as addiction, anger management, depression, anxiety, communication, parenting, and stress management. Since moving to Texas, Tia has acted as program coordinator of an adolescent substance abuse treatment program assisting adolescents with substance abuse, mental health, behavioral issues, and personality disorders.

Tia believes in fostering a non-judgmental relationship with individuals and practices from a strengths-based perspective, focusing on one’s assets and potential. She practices dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement, and person-centered techniques to assist patients in reaching their goals. Her purpose is to help individuals improve coping skills, increase personal happiness, and discover stability in daily life. Tia has a passion for counseling and strives to improve the lives of her clients in ways that are both personally and relationally beneficial to the individual in need.
